Using "gardening" in lieu of "farming" as this wiki covers only production of food only for the needs of a family or small community, and not for sale (although you might very well sell whatever you produce in excess of actual needs).Originally a "garden" was a small scale collection of plants for food, medicine, cosmetic purposes, and decoration of the landscape around a home, without any significant distinction between utilitarian purposes and purely ornamental ones. This is still true in many parts of the world such as in the Middle East, where Date Palms and Pomegranate trees are considered both beautiful and useful. For our purposes, we are returning to this less specialized sense of "garden".
