Actually, MM, that's the old style. We prefer not to cook ours that long; thus, the direction to put it in the blender. So you have to keep an eye on it to avoid the overcooking part. A lot of split pea soups bought in restaurants have that "overcooked" or sometimes burnt taste.
The hot sauce is a blend of garden peppers with lime, salt and sometimes a bit of cilantro: cayenne, serrano, jalapeno and Peruvian peppers.
