ammo prices - doubled overnight
« on: November 05, 2008, 12:48:07 PM »
Here is the transcript of a chat I had with cheaper than dirt this morning about why their ammo prices more than doubled overnight.  THis was specificaly in relation to 7.62x39 ammo.

Cheaper Than Dirt Online Support will be with you shortly.
You are now chatting with 'Martin'
Martin: Cheaper Than Dirt Online Information & Support. How may I assist you?
Robert: I have a quick question about the item mentiond. Yesterday it was at 4.67 today it is 9.97? what happened?
Robert: also the 9.97 is over $3 more than what you have the list price at.
Martin: Let me see what I can find.
Robert: and you still are saying we have a savings of 3.41 and -51.98%
Martin: The prices are changed in two spots, when the prices went up we didn't change our list price which also has to be manually updated.  We are working to get the new list prices.
Robert: so the 9.97 is correct? it more than doubled overnight?
Martin: The presidential outcome has drastically increased the demand for ammunition, magazines, and AR-15 parts resulting in supply shortages. The price is continuing to increase and we can not honor lower or printed pricing. We apologize, however we are not in control of this situation and our current inventory is expected to sell out today. Replenishing the inventory may take months at much higher costs.
Robert: thanks

I wonder if that is just for military spec ammo ( 7.62x39 , is usually cheapest ) or also for hunting stuff like 30.06?

any case, I think skinheads and neo-nazi types were really rooting for Obama to win so they could turn
up their campaigns/ agenda's and say they were right in that the black , jew etc etc were taking over america.

If true, we need put more emphasis on anti-terror protection at home than we do abroad.

Of course that will just feed into the big brother knows best for you type mentality if they carry out many homegrown attacks
and govt will indeed lessen our civil rights to "protect" us

7.62x39 is the same price I paid two weeks ago.  .223 is up $10 from Saturday (for ss109 prvi partizan).

At AR15.com they are maintaining a list of gouging retailers:

http://www.tacticalcourses.com/forums/topic.html?b=1&f=5&t=783339

they have more than one thread devoted to Cheaper than Dirt:

http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=2&f=312&t=165235&page=1

About page three is the CTD representative claiming that their suppliers are raising prices on them and they have to pass on the increases - it doesn't fly.  They also have some fun screen shots that show the "our price" being higher than the "list price" with a negative savings.

Grab what you can at Walmart before the stores get their next shipments.

I was at the Washington Arms Collectors' Gun Show in Monroe (Washington state) this afternoon.  I overheard some of the vendors remarking that their stock of arms and ammo were selling very fast.  One vendor said that he bought out all the price stickers at the local Staples - so he could put new prices on everything.  He also said that next week he plans to increase the price of all his guns by $200.  Could be 'talking up the sale' or it could be simple truth.

It was probably a little of both.  "Black Rifles" - AR-15s and and such are sold before they hit the shelves.  One guy on Gunbroker was claiming he had a shipment of 25 coming in this week or next - a buddy of mine bought his last before he got it (the guy has a good reputation).  The dealers can probably ask just about whatever price they want - but Colt/Bushmaster/et al haven't raised the wholesale price.  If you've got a Remington BDL 30.06, the price is the same as yesterday.

www.proload.com sells a case (1000) rounds of 7.62x51 ammo for $515 and there is no shipping either. That's the best price I've seen to date. Ammo is flying off the shelves. I was at a gunshow today. When it opened, there was a vendor with ammo cases laid out on pallets stacked about knee high. It looks like one of those African safari shows where you see the lion kill. I was there for about 2 1/2 hours. As I left I walked past the vendor and there were only a few cases of each ammo left on some pretty bare looking pallets. The prices were only slightly elevated above normal for some reason. I thought it would be through the roof.

What kind of ammo do I buy?

For my glock 9mm, I found some "Winchester Ranger 9MM Luger 115 Gr. Jacketed Hollow Point +P" at http://www.proload.com.
Is this recommended?

For my Sig Sauer 556 Swat, I found a bunch of Black Hills brand choices including the "Black Hills 223 Rem. 68 gr. Heavy Match" at http://www.proload.com.  At http://www.proload.com I also found some Fiocchi FMJ rounds, "55-gr. FMJ Ammo".  They are more expensive.

I am trying to research what kind of bullets to buy, but every time I read a bullet that is recommended, I discover that it is sold out every where.

thanks!

Asking what kind of bullet to buy is like asking what kind of shoe to wear.  It depends.

For target practice with either weapon, I'd recommend buying inexpensive brands such as the low end PMC, Sellior & Belloit Winchester White Box, etc.  For serious applications - say competition - you'd already be reloading.  For hunting, I'd go with "match" ammo.

For the elusive Zombie or SHTF scenario, you'll want something like the Black Hills you have, or another reputable brand such as Federal or Prvi Partizan "Green Tip."

Especially for your Sig 556, I'd watch buying factory reloads or Wolf (or any steel cased ammo).  Many of the AR-15 variants have a hard time with Wolf because it uses steel cases.  I'm just starting to reload, but I've been told that the 5.56/.223 is one of the most difficult cartridges to reload and the 5.56 AR-15 variants are extremely picky about ammo.  Many of the factory reloads, for whatever reason, don't meet the standard.

The steel cased ammo works well in some weapons and will barely function in others.  If you try it, you'll find out real quick where your gun is at.  For example, I have a 9mm XD that has about 1 malfunction per 50 rounds of Wolf.  I've shot about 2K rounds through it.  My buddy has the exact same gun, but has shot about 20K rounds through his.  His will eat Wolf.  My Ruger P89/90 also eat Wolf with no problem.

For ammo purchases, I'd try Ammoman.com, Aimsurplus.com, wideners.com, natchezss.com, or Surplusammo.com.  I've done business will all of these companies and found that they reputable.  YMMV.

I've reloaded a long time, and .223 sucks to reload. It takes about 5 times longer because you have to lube and trim the brass. They work fine in AR-15s, and they work great if you load them hot. You gotta make sure you get the lube off the brass before you load it obviously. The main thing with loading them hot is you have to sight in your weapon with hot ammo, and if you change to practice ammo, you have to sight it in again.
