Thanks Future, you introduced me to Joe Salatin with your post about Food Inc a couple of years ago and since then he is the closest thing to a hero i will ever likely worship. That 45 minute talk was wonderful. Here's a 10 minute interview he did the same day with a local radio station:

He also gave a presentation later that night about 30 miles from here. Would have been interesting to attend but his message is just as available on-line for free. Should worshipers walk in front of this guy spreading flower petals?? Nahhh, but he'd probably like walking in fresh cow patties with you.  :laughing002:

I haven't listened to Beeherder's link yet; but The Future's link is quite good.

I always believed that it didn't matter whether plant material was digested by fungus & bacteria or by cows and sheep.  But, "No!" Salatin maintains that it makes a world of difference if one cares about keeping nutrients in the soil as opposed to the atmosphere.

Also new to me is the importance of earth worms.  Apparently they are important in binding trace elements into organic compounds....

I'm looking forward to listening to Beeherder's link.

To be fair, without animals, only the CO2 and possibly nitrogen would be returned to the air, the remaining nutrients would go into the soil.  Co2 and nitrogen are important though.  General rule, the smaller the animal, the better the conversion process.  (This is where Joel and I diverge). Earthworms whoop cattle, lamb, and chickens with ease.  They are my Micro livestock.

Did eye fail to see something about worms? Ok the bees really sweeten things up as a micro-livestock but the red wigglers have been in my care longer than the bees, and any success or healthy food from my gardens was no doubt enhanced by those red wigglers. So by keeping worms to feed the soil and bees to help my plants have sexual relations maybee life is a little sweeter??

Joe Salatin is my hero!! but The Future sure has some good ideas, like "small is good."
