Dame, if you thought I was tan for my profile pic, you should see me now!
Tom and I spent the day harvesting grain. Mostly wheat, but also some xTriticale. Some of the xTriticale looks pretty good. So does much of the wheat. We're learning what works in this climate and what does not.
Fall planting seems to work best, because the fields are just too wet in the spring to get planting done on time, then you're fighting to beat the calendar. Better to get it in before the rainy season (or as it's just starting) not after the ground is soaked. We were able to get crops of stuff that one of our predecessors failed with and gave up on, because we planted it late fall (bad choice--need to move it up a little) instead of spring. Well it's spring grain but winters here not cold enough to kill wheat or xTriticale. The head start makes a huge difference.
I'm tired and very, very well tanned. Hopefully not burned. Will take it easy tomorrow. Hopefully Tom can do so as well. We deserve a little rest. I'm all scratched up from burrs and sharp weedy grass seeds. My shoes now have sharp little weedy grass seeds embedded in the lining. :( Need to learn proper protection against those hazards.
