Added spam trap

I installed a filter that looks for suspicious http headers. It should work fairly transparently, but if you're no longer able to read the board (including presumably this post), that's why.

Added another one. I'll be watching to see how it does over the next few days.

It does automatically what I used to do manually, namely, check applications for membership against the Stop Forum Spam database.

What eventually happened was that the spammers were hitting me with registrations--at least several per hour 24 hours a day--faster than I could check them. I now have a backlog of 3,748 registrations, the vast majority of them spammers. Anybody who wasn't a spammer got lost like a needle in a haystack (sorry!).

Hope this works, because we need some "new blood" to keep the forums going.

I will also be linking this forum to a blog, so that you will get some fresh articles to read, probably a couple times a week, in addition to other posts.

And I'll be updating the forum software within a few days or weeks.

The spam trap is not working. They seem to work for a few days, then they stop working as the spammer software detects them and adapts. Sort of like the Borg.

I'll work on it when I get back.

My email service is having that same problem.

"Truth is hate to those that hate truth".
