Greeting to all!
« on: October 26, 2008, 02:15:07 PM »
Hi, even though I'm new here I'm not new to survival. I don't know everything and unfortunately, most of what I know is just that knowledge. Many things I have learned from hands on, like storing food, firearms and several other useful things, but lots of other knowledge is theoretical. I am currently doing something that takes up most of my time and since I'm going to move in a few months, store much food here at my current location isn't prudent. Plus my wife asked me not too :laughing002: We do have some stuff, mostly left over from making sure we were set for a hurricane strike. Since I'm a bit strange, I felt that a little puzzle may be fun to figure out where I live. What I do is a bit different too, but that's why I'm weird. Also extra points for my aprox. age. I will tell all later.

Ready for the puzzle? Here goes. I've been into survivalism of  some form or another since I was twelve. Since I didn't have much money and there weren't any computers I learned through borrowed books and doing as much as could. Later when computers became useful, I downloaded stuff from BBS's via modem and read that. Three of my jobs actually taught me survival related skills. These skills included, firearms and tactics, nuclear, biological and chemical survival skills along with securing people and locations. These jobs only took up almost twelve years of my life, but I was an IT person for another thirteen, but I'm currently not doing an IT job. I am not retired, nor am I close enough in age to retire.

I currently live in a gated community that is guarded 24x7x365. We have two gas stations that have stores inside. Two other convenience stores that don't have gas stations, one of those is primarily a liquor store. All of these stores sell beer, wine and liquor, but the one has a larger selection. We have our own grocery store, retail store similar to Kmart or Wal Mart. A food court, furniture store laundry mat, library, and bowling alley. We have a Burger King, Popeye's and Blimpy that aren't part of the food court. Two gyms, one with an indoor pool and two outdoor pools  and a running track. We have our own 18 hole golf course too. I have been living here since May 2008, but am getting ready to leave to go to Tennessee, to live by my daughter, her husband and my son, until he leave's for the Army in May 2009.

Anybody guess? Anyone tell me who Publius was? BTW, my real name is Bob

Anybody guess? Anyone tell me who Publius was?

Roman consul who succeeded Lucious Junus Brutus. Decreed several popular laws, including one that sanctioned extrajudicial executions of anyone who attempted to re-establish a monarchy (which was used to justify the assassination of Julius Caesar). Called "friend of the people".

Correct MountainMeg. Although, I used to be a Federalist, I think I am now an anti-Federalist.

OK I see that many folks have viewed, but not answered. I forgot that we have a theater too, along with a Hospital, clinic and two dental clinics. For those of you who thought I was some snotty rich guy, living somewhere in Florida, like Boca Raton. Nope :laughing002: I live on an Army base, so no I don't have any money :eatdrink004: Well the pay is better than it used to be. I am a two time looser, this is the second time in. I passed the drug test, but I think I slipped through the psychological screen. I came back in want to do my part again, but it's not to be, I was injured and they want to put me out. I joined the Army the first time in 1983, the day we invaded Grenada. I went to basic at Ft Jackson in 1984. Spent four years active duty and left in spring of 1988. Went to active duty Drill Sergeant School at the end of 1988 as an Army Reservist. I graduated and after Christmas my LE/Security class started in January 1989. Did that for six years and because I was Federal, when Clinton was cutting back, I went ahead and took a buyout. Went into the computer field and worked for a few fortune 500's, Xerox for 3 1/2 years, Kmart HQ in Troy MI 4 years and Harcourt for a year. Was doing some Network Engineering consulting when I decided to join the Army again. BIG pay cut, but that's not why I came back.

First time around I was trained as a mechanic, then when they lost their Nuclear, Biological and Chemical person, they sent me to school for that. I did that for 1 1/2 years and went back to the motor pool to be the shop foreman as a new buck sergeant. Came back in 19 years later. I know, nuts. They wouldn't give me computers. Said that was for the new guys. Hmmm. I went back to the Nuclear and Chemical stuff, since I liked it. I'm down here attached to the 3rd Infantry Division. I want zero praise for any of this. Please don't. I write this to let folks know, that I know a few things about radiation and stuff. The federal job was mostly in a Nuclear reactor, but at a facility that made nuclear weapons material, so I know radiation. I also have one of those easy FEMA certs on nuclear incident management.

Like I said I've been doing the survivalist stuff since I was 12. I'm almost 45 now. Am I an expert? Nope, but I know some stuff :confused004: But what I know doesn't work for everyone. I am here to learn, and share. I'm certainly not a guru or anything. I pitch in wear I might be of use and lurk and learn elsewhere.

Bob

Cool. You are like two of me.
