Hello from PA
« on: October 25, 2008, 08:40:22 PM »
I am also a newbie due to MSNBC's mention.  It was nice to find a web community with the same concerns I have.

Hi, I'm MountainMeg and my family and I just moved from the San Bernardino Mountains in California to a 1/2 acre plot near Gettysburg, PA.  My husband is an electrical engineer with the gov't so should his job should be secure when, (what was that acronym I saw?), the SHTF.  I'm a SAHM with a background in financial analysis before kids and 9 years of tax preparation after kids.  Two kids, one 9 with autism and one 7 who's smarter than me!   :laughing002:  (ask me about her parent-teacher conference sometime!)  My 9 yr old is on a gluten free diet so I've got some extra parameters to consider.

It's quite a bird's eye view of the economy to look over almost 400 returns in a tax season.  I told my hubby last February that the economy was going to slide based on what I saw in construction worker's tax returns and going into related areas such as transportation and building supplies.

I think my biggest question right now is how to stock up for what I think is coming down the pipe when your spouse is not as "in tune" with the trouble.  I've gotten my way on basics - he got me a generator for our 15th anniversary, and trust me I consider that the utmost in romance!  I've been able to stock up on many essentials.  I've planned garden areas -- out of 1/2 acre due to the septic/well/storm system installed I think I would be able to plant about 1/6th of it in various areas.  We're both qualified on firearms and have them.  But trying to convince him that this is going to be serious is difficult.  Oy Vey!

Enough rambling!  Thanks for the site and howdy!   :greet024:

Glad to have you. 1/6 of 1/2 of an acre works out to a little over 3300 square feet. That will produce a good amount of food. Remember the three sisters: squash, beans, and corn. Tell him that you think stockpiling is romantic.

I don't know, because mine is in total denial. She keeps saying things that make absolutely no sense in terms of where reality is taking us. She is projecting past memories of lifestyle and institutions, into a future where those are not options.

It's sort of the same thing as with your husband--her job relatively secure. But I am working out alternative income streams anyway.

My mother was overjoyed to get a new septic tank for their 30th anniversary.
