Ramen noodles.
« on: October 25, 2008, 03:35:14 PM »
Mostly everyone has heard about Ramen noodles. The cheap little package of tastey noodles. I for one love them. This is not really a food package topic but doesn't need it. The shelf life of a pachage of Ramen noodles is aver two years. I was looking at the pantry today and looked at the box of noodles. The box is a case of about fifty packages. Only costs about five dollars at Sams. Thats cheap. I about these several months ago. The exp. date is 01/07/2010. Thats along time for a store bout non-canned item.
It would be wise to buy several cases of the variety boxes and keep in a cool dark place. I would think that packaging these in a vacuum bag would increase the shelf life even further.
They are actually really nutritious. I am listing the nutrition facts.
servings per pachage 2.
Calories - 190
calories from fat 70
total fat - 7g
sat fat - 3.5
trans fat - 0g
cholesterol - 0
sodium - 780mg
carbs - 26g
fiber -1g
sugers - 0
protein - 5g

Not too bad for a cheap meal. Not overdone with anything.

There's a guy that my brother works with. He is a graduate student in the college of physics at some prestigious university out in California (Berkley?). Anyways, one of the students that was in the same dorm as him decided to see how long he could live on just Ramen Noodles. He came down with scurvy. I'm told he made it about 6 weeks :laughing005:

Remember vitamin pills with your food stores.

Scurvy is the bane of all dry-food diets. Yes, store vitamin tablets. Try to eat fresh food when you can but have the tablets just in case.

I used to live on ramen noodles alot in college during the 80's

they work fine as long as you supplement with some other variety of foods

I too ate a lot of top ramen in college, along with tortilla's on the discount rack, trout from the city lake.
But always had a bottle of multi vitamins and about 1 gram of vitamin C everyday.
All I ever got was a bleeding ulcer, I was a stress monster in those days.
In our preps now there is a lot of vitamins. Just don't know what your getting from dried goods and canned food , better safe than sorry.

And to think we've got 200 pkts put aside, just in case you came to visit, Alaskan.  :laughing002:
Mind you, Chi always adds a load of diced vegetables to them, so they're pretty good!

Hi Bid, fancy meeting you here.
We also beef up the top ramen. Like when we have a leftover chicken breast from dinner, will cube it up and stir it into the noodles just before its done.
Also shrimp, mushrooms or frozen veggies. ........Alaskan......Dennis..

PS...Bid has been an internet buddy for some time now.

In prison they make them right in the bag. I have never been for more than a few days (in the clink) but you can learn alot from those guys.

Only ever in county on petty stuff. Assault, DUI (I'm a recovering alcoholic.) I used to be quite the trouble maker. Now I use my evil powers for good.

AndrewG - Program skills are even better than jail bird skills.   You probably have the least likely to panic spot.

Yes, Ramen noodles are tasty, filling, cheap, and easy.  But take a second look at that sodium - 780 mg.  When I eat Ramen I use only about 1/4 of the seasoning packet  and discard the rest.  They're plenty tasty that way.

Good tip 404, I can save the rest of the flavoring packet and use it as soup base.

Ramen noodles nearly killed me when I was 21.  I grew up eating "real" food and the encytotoxins (MSG) caused my heart to malfunction.  The hospital thought I was overdosed on drugs, took them a while to figure out it was an MSG reaction.  I had never had one before, really opened my eyes to what I was putting into my body.  I became a "foodie" then, reading all labels and finally switching to buying all ingredients myself and making everything from scratch.  Only thing that has changed in the last 17 years is now i grow, catch or kill nearly all of it myself.  No more msg, no modified corn starches, I do buy wheat, rice and beans in bulk but I grew enough shelling beans this year to last through the winter.  I do not have the facilities to grow rice, but working on finding a corn I can do and protect from the deer.

It is not a survival food if it is that bad for you <smile>
If you can catch it and kill it, or grow it, dont buy it.

Thats a real rare reaction. So yes it is a survival food. Not bad for you if you are in a survival situation. Your home grown health food store will be closed. Remember the nature of this board. It is a good survival choice. Maybe not for you or anyone with the same reactions. Some people are allergic to milk, peanuts or tomatoes. That's just life. There is no all around safe food.

Common sense tells you not to eat just one of any food. Many foods can become toxic if you stick to just that. Rabbit and fish are two examples. Allways supplement with vitamins if available. Remember use common sense.
