Pleased to meet you.  :greet009: We have at least one other Alaskan here. I will try to put some stuff in my wiki about growing crops in the far north. I've got a few interesting crops myself.

Alaskan,
Alaska weighs heavily on my mind. Would it bother you if I bombard you with AK related questions?

Right on. First subject is gill nets. I'm trying to figure out what the best material is and the best mesh size (streched) is. I've been told that braided Dacron is easier to repair than monofilament. True or false? What mesh size is best? I'm not going for any particular species, I just want the mesh size that will catch the greatest number of fish regardless of species. I would plan to use this net is smaller streams and tributaries as opposed to the big rivers and lakes. I guessing I would see a lot of rainbow trout, dolly varden, maybe char, possibly some of the smaller salmon like coho or chum.

Opsec: On gill nets, dacron is easier to sew , trying to repair mono nets will make you crazy.
Since I don't know the area you'll be fishing. I would say a 3"-3 1/2 " mesh would be a good all around size.
I havn't used gill nets in small stream or rivers in my area, because it's illegal, but when SHTF all bets are off.
Have been known to run up a creek or two with my waders on and a dip net. They all taste the same.

Ok now, that's 3 1/2" stretched mesh or does that mean that each of the little squares is 3 1/2" on each side...because that would work out to a 7" stretched mesh. I want to be sure we're talking about the same mesh size here.

Thanks for the clarification on that. I would have made a bad mistake with that.

I happen to catch this site browsing thru the net.

My husband and I were moderate Y2K'ers. Not ashamed at all that I was somewhat prepared, but now, it's almost overwhelming to actually see the possibilities the future could hold for all of us.

I am a nurse working full time, travel about 4,000 miles a month. My husband after having 3 back surgeries and bilateral total knee replacements in 2 years is disabled.

We have about 20 acres of mixed timber( very hilly) and fertile pasture, fruit trees, grow my own vegetables as work allows. We have well water in addition to "city water " but have the well water pumped electrical. My most pressing project is building a chicken coop and would appreciate any advice, recommendations, et.

We went this past week to a gun carry certification class that usually has 4-5 attending 2x a month. The class was standing room only. Now they are providing classes 3 x a week. Class is taught by x-marines. Everyone there was there for 2 reasons, the election and the economy.

So glad to have found this site, only problem is...it's addicting!!!

Recently found the site and thought it might become addictive, however, it takes way less time to stay current than get current (less than a week).  Now I find myself dashing off to set up for and actually apply suggestions.

Dame, expect this site to evolve. Biggest problem is low-budget off-the-shelf software, that doesn't integrate well. But things will get better.

What kind of software do you need/want?  Maybe one of us has it or knows how to make it.
