Disaster psychology...radio interview this Sunday.
« on: August 07, 2008, 11:30:03 PM »
This Sunday 08/10/08, there will be a radio interview on Coast To Coast AM on the subject of people's response to disasters. Here's the blurb for the upcoming show:  "When the worst happens, how will you react? Journalist Amanda Ripley discusses the psychology of disaster response and her new book, The Unthinkable. Host: Ian Punnett".

The website is: http://www.coasttocoastam.com

I don't consider the Coast To Coast AM show (formerly known as the Art Bell show) to be a reliable source of information, but you do hear things there that you won't hear anyplace else, however you have to separate the wheat from the chaff. This Sunday appears to be one of those rare occasions when they have a guest who is a legitimate subject matter expert.

On the upper left section of the home page you can check the affiliates section to find a station that carries the show in your area. It's on late night radio from 10pm to 3am Pacific time. That's 1am to 6am Eastern.

There's no way I am staying up that late!  (If it were up to me, I would be asleep already, and it is only a quarter after 9.  The baby is climbing all over me, and I am waiting for him to get sleepy so we can go to bed.)

So, somebody please jot down some notes.

This is the recap of the show on the Coast to Coast website:

"For the first 2½ hours, journalist Amanda Ripley discussed the psychology of disaster response and her new book, The Unthinkable. When a person encounters a disastrous circumstance they may first react with disbelief or denial, as the brain tries to normalize the situation, she explained. Under extreme stress, a person can experience time distortion, with events slowing down or speeding up.
In a desperate situation, strangers often become more generous with each other, and people support each other as a group, she detailed. Blue collar men without children are the most likely to perform risky, heroic acts, while women are more likely to survive severe storms such as hurricanes, because they are willing to evacuate, Ripley reported.
Agencies in charge, such as FEMA, tend to distrust how the public will respond to disasters, she said. Assessing your risks in advance in advance of calamity is helpful, Ripley commented, and people who take an active role in responding to a disaster tend to have a quicker emotional recovery than those who remain passive."

Notice the comment about how agencies in charge relate to the people that they are supposed to rescue. They don't trust me, and I don't trust them. That's fair.
