Top 100 items to disappear first

This looks like a well-thought out list. I think it was a group effort:

When I was 20 years old I lived for more than 6 months without electricity.

What I valued most was a battery powered radio.  Buying batteries for the radio was my main luxury.

I never even considered buying a generator, and wouldn't now.

Photo-voltaic panels and rechargeable batteries yes.  Generator: NO.

I had a kerosene lantern.  I really disliked buying kerosene and never decided whether it was worth it.  Probably not.

I think an LED light would be worth it.

In 1973 I was not really roughing it.  I had a natural gas refrigerator & stove.  And a wood stove for heat.  I just didn't have electricity.

So, on that list I would remove 'generator' and in its place put battery powered radio.

Mike if your not aware, there are many decent radios that are wind up or solar. Ive used many myself. they work well, and not much more expensive then a battery powered radio by itself. which youd also need rechargables and the solar charger for.

I was thinking the same thing: windup or solar. Radios don't need much electricity.

that list ain't legit.

first things to go aren't gonna be :

#  Carbon Monoxide Alarm (battery powered)
# Board Games, Cards, Dice
# d-con Rat poison, MOUSE PRUFE II, Roach Killer
#  Lantern Hangers
# Boy Scout Handbook
#  d-con Rat poison, MOUSE PRUFE II, Roach Killer
# Mousetraps, Ant traps & cockroach magnets
# Fire Extinguishers
# Survival Guide Book
# “Survival-in-a-Can” ???????????
# Big Dogs (and plenty of dog food)

well, maybe the dog food will go first.
and some things you just can't find now anyways.

this list has to be re worked for what REALLY will go first

What do windup radios cost?  I was aware of them, but assumed they were gimicky and expensive.

I could very well be wrong.

I mis-understood the list.  I was thinking it was a list of things we should want.

No!  It is a list of things that will disappear from the store's shelves first.  So I am #1 would be generators.

********
I for-sure wasn't aware of  Survivial-In-A-Can and am pretty sure I need that more than anyone else.

What is it?

Mike, they're not gimmicky. They sell in many parts of the world where batteries are expensive and/or unobtainable. I have a lot of non-battery items from places like Russia. Merchants finding a niche sell them here for emergencies and convenience (never need a battery...).

Quality is low, because they tend to be marketed for poor countries. You know, like this one.  :rolleyes008:

We had a bus driver once who used to have a wind-up radio for use when we were stuck in traffic not moving for hours at a time.  The buses aren't equipped with radios, because they aren't supposed to listen to them while driving.

You can find a few at Emergency Essentials.  http://beprepared.com/search.asp?t=ss&ss=radio&image1.x=0&image1.y=0
I bought the Kaito Black Voyager last year and it seems to work pretty well.  It has a solar panel, built-in rechargeable battery, and a crank as well.

No mention of a solar cooker, or toilet paper on the list. Water pumps are mentioned, but not water storage. I think the best selection of radios of all types is from the C. Crane Co. for $90, this radio is an actual transceiver with a microphone that is a wind up model: http://www.ccrane.com/more-categories/emergency-preparedness/midland-base-camp-radio.aspx

First things to disappear? Really? Uh.. #1 - water, #2 food, #3 clothes, #4 DVDs and entertainment.

Duh. It's not like this doesn't happen EVERY SINGLE TIME there is a storm or scare of some kind. I don't see any of that stuff on the list.

I guess it doesn't really say "when xxx happens" or "in yyy situation". Just in general. Water goes first EVERY TIME. I don't think it would even occur to most people to get a water filter.

When I think of the items likely to disappear, my mind goes to disapear out of what I have on hand rather than what I find at the stores.

I do not know about first to go, but I do know that a dozen or so pairs of those cheap stretchie gloves are very handy when there are children.  They fit a large range of sizes and kids in stress can loose gloves at an amazing rate.  The same with socks and even shoes.

Stress also brings on additional headaches and stomach upsets so stocks of analgesics (or a couple of willow trees :laughing005:) and antiacids (I prefer buttermilk powder or gingerale) would also likely be in high demand.

I don't have a generator and don't plan on getting one because once the fuel runs out they are worthless. Maybe a solar powered one but that would cost alot of $$.
