Axes
« on: September 05, 2009, 07:14:49 PM »
I have been checking out axes and I found that the Gransfors Axes are the best ones out their. I ordered three different ones they offer. The Wildfire Hatchet, The samll forest axe and the Large Splitting axe. I bit pricey but I'm told they come out of the box very sharp and keep a good edge. Looks to be well worth the money.  Best price I found was at BenMeadows.com. Two of them are backordered and will be getting them at the end of the month. Read a few things that said if you could find them buy them.

Having bought two of them myself, I am of the opinion that the Scandinavian Forest Axe is the best one of the bunch. I like the longer handle than the Small Forest Axe. The shorter handle makes it too easy for the axe to glance off and drive into your shin. The longer handle is safer as the head will drive into the ground instead of your foot or leg from a bad strike.

Ouch.....the mental image of a axe going into the leg really sounds bad. I also buy every used ax I find cheap. some yard sales out here in montana have some real bargins. Handles are redily available to replace the beat up ones and a little sharpening can make a usefull tool. I prefer 6 pound splitting mauls for firewood making. Hand hatchets are really usefull at times to. We keep one in the car for salvaging feathers and fur from road kill. Just the other day we missed a really nice fox tail because we didn't have anything to chop it off.
Gotta learn how to knit socks and mittens if you want to survive in montana.
