I can't vouch for the reliability of these sources since I have not dealt with them personally. Caveat emptor:

For those not on their mailing list, Tomato Fest have their annual sale on now.  There is a list of 80 tomato types at $2 off.  Seperately, they have an extensive list of cooler climate tomatoes - 126 types in total!  Some are and some are not included in the sale.

Beware of the Tomatofest sale; it's generally seed that's getting old. I bought quite a bit, and had low germination rates.

If you can catch it and kill it, or grow it, dont buy it.

Link is missing Tom.  Atash: I'm glad you mention that, as I suspected this, not just for them but ALL the companies running sales at this time of year.  Funny thing is, it will be profitable for them to sell these packs at a 50% discount!  With that said, I have not had any germination problems with the TF items I bought last year on sale.  Oh and their packaging system IS sophisticated enough to date stamp each package and the seed is a few years old.

Tomato seeds have to be ancient or poorly stored to really lose viability.

here is that link again.  I edited the other post as well.  Dont know why I didnt add the link.  Not much point without it.

I've spent all day thinking things through and I'm just about ready to send off another couple hundred dollars to Heritage Harvest Seed.

It is fun, isnt it?

I emailed them my list, then called them after they responded and gave them CC.

I called the lady there, they grow everything at that site or at a sister location that is about 100 miles north of Winnipeg, so they aren't a clearinghouse for other people's seed.

Here's another one:

http://www.echobooks.org/

Not so many crops, but some very unusual special-purpose types, such as a carrot bred in Brazil to go to seed without overwintering--for trying to grow carrots in the tropics.

Also has many extremely specialised manuals.

Indeed.  Included in those extensive how to docs is that online rootop gardening presentation i posted elsewhere.  They have lots of detailed info.  And some of my money in exchange for seeds...

Moving this to "sticky", because it's an important topic for buying seeds for next year, and stocks of some popular seeds will run out quickly. Also, we are expecting significant food price inflation next year.

I suggest keeping it simple, and growing core staple crops (not celery...) that you know you can use in large amounts, and that you know you can grow. Avoid tricky not to mention low-calorie, low-yield crops. I should talk--I'm growing cauliflower. But it's easy to grow in MY climate (harder in most others--it's a fussy crop), and I'm just growing a few plants.

At this time of the year, Atash, many of us have limited potential for high-calorie, high-yield crops.  I assume you mean core staple crops starting in the Spring.  I raise my hand in quilt:  I have celery growing.  Such an easy crop that does great in my Winter climate.  I also have cauliflower AND broccoli and heaps of garlic and onions and fava beans and heaps and heaps of other brassica's.  The garlic, onions, favas, potatoes are something like five months before harvest given the cold.

But thanks for the reminder about "core staple crops."  I love growing out experimental crops, but they take up time that I could be using to address the inflationary aspect to important food crops.
