Fabulous,  I love working with puppies, even the ones who are struggling unless there is something actually wrong with them.  The training plan is so much more organized than my intuitive mom approach based on a lifetime of watching animals and people, parent animal and people babies.

The long haired ones would do much better here in a colder climate, as proven by our 10 yr old Husky.  I would continue to miss the touch of pit bull my previous dominant dog had, it makes them instinctively protect family from large agressive herbavours, like bovine bulls.

On first purusal, the same routine, slightly modified works with most animals, including chickens.

I am excited about this and I ramble.

A note on dog defense: Offer the charging dog your left forearm by holding it horizontally out in front of you, it will invariably take the offering. The moment it launches off the ground to bite is when you start to move. Drive the knife (held in right hand) into the dog's chest. You should be stabbing just as the dog is biting. Make sure the dog can't see the knife, they are smart enough to understand what's about to happen and they will evade.

It would take an immense amount of training which most people do not bother providing for a dog to be the aggressor outside of thier own territory.  On their own territory they are the ones defending and the other is the aggressor.  That would be why you need two dogs who get along and work together.  The same is true when they are defending from wild animals.  Mine make determinations more on odor than on vision, hence they can smell gun powder and drugs and aggression.

I used to have one of those ultrasonic dog repelling devices. I'll have to get another one. Last time I bought one, it was only about $20.

I used to train dogs.  Taking down a big aggressive dog is not hard.  Not killing them if you only want to take them down is harder.  No knife needed.  As said earlier, bring up one of your forearms.  When it is latching on to that (protects your face which is what they are going for) bring your knee into their chest.  Hard.

That is all it takes.  Do it hard enough and you kill them (doesnt take much) do it lightly and you still take the wind out of them.

Quick way to cure a dog of jumping on you is just to bring your knee up a few times.  They will stop doing it quick.

A dog biting your leg is different.  Best bet then is to drop your weight down on them with a knee or elbow on their ribs or spine.  dont try to do anything to a dogs neck with your hands.  Worthless.  You have seen a dog run to the end of a chain before.  Doesnt phase them.  Too much muscle from holding their head horizontal.  You can choke them out with a forearm if you are behind them.  Just garrote them with your forearm hard until they go limp.  Expect a lot of struggling though.

If you can catch it and kill it, or grow it, dont buy it.

Cool. I'll remember this.

Question for you darwin: I have heard it said that there really is no way to fool a dog's nose if it is tracking you. Is there any way you know of to slow down or discourage a tracking dog?
