Fortify your house
« on: February 17, 2009, 09:07:38 PM »
Not sure if this is the right thread to put this under, but what are the best ways to fortify your house or your sanctuarue? I heard of using barbwire, if you have enough people...have them stand watch. Are thier things out their that could really make you home secure no matter where it might be. I thinking in the worst case serniro(sp?) situation. I know someone mention in a thread about a Doctor that build a house that was really fortify. I'm very new to this subject and wide open for suggestions.

Atash if you feel this should be moved somewhere else for discussion, feel free to move it.

Against what?

Small arms?  Dirt.  Heavier stuff?  Hardened concrete.

Rusty I thinking against other people that want what I have. I know firepower is great but you can't be out their 24/7. How do you portect when you need to sleep?

I think their are power in numbers and it would be great to have a community of people like all of us in the same spot. That would be the safest in my humble opion. Castle would be great. Anyone got a spot to build!!!!

A wrought iron fence about 7 feet tall with the spear tips and dogs roaming. It would be expensive, but it would stop most of the zombies from getting in.

To me, fortify means the structure.  To stop small arms, nothing beats dirt or sand. If you build the barrier wall right, it'll absorb a lot firepower without collapsing.

Setting up a community is a entirely different thing.  How many people do you want?  For a small community, everyone needs to get a long.  In a large one, there are bound to be some slackers (my job).  Something you might want to check out is the Free State Movement.  I'm not sure how much luck they've had, but the idea was to pick a lightly populated state - like Vermont and have every one move there.  They're organized to run their own slate of candidates and try to turn ballot initiatives.  It's a neat idea - if you can uproot and mover to the place they've chosen AND you get along with them.

What usually happens is you get a couple of people who disagree entirely, and it causes a rift in the group.  I've seen it happen.

Aspects of 'fortify' to consider:
1. Get off your property and figure out how you would attack it: from where, in which direction, using what cover and concealment, and using what method of attack.  Get down on your belly behind bushes and trees at the limit of vision so that you can see what an attacker would see.
2. Unobvious as to the valuables inside and the defenses.  The nature of defenses should become clear only after an attacker is committed.
3. It should be difficult for a passer-by to determine how many people are present or how many routinely live there.
4. Well protected against fire, both natural and man-made.  Flame proof construction is a start.  Substantial fire suppression equipment should also be present, or at least many buckets of dirt.
5. Natural barriers to foot-intruders are less obvious than fences and barb wire.  Pyrocanthia (firethorn) grows into a fearsome 'living barb wire' shrub.  Other plants have the same capability.
4. Ordinary looking terrain features, such as drainage ditches or a row of sturdy trees, should preclude approach by vehicle except by the driveway.  It should be impossible to ram the house with a vehicle, even a 4WD or large truck.
6. Dogs can be eliminated with poisen meat.  Pens of geese were used as guard animals at night by the Roman Legions.  Maybe a mixture of the two might work.
Do not meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and good with catsup.

I dont think it is a real expectation to make your home invasion-proof in and of itself. (for most of us, unless it was constructed that way to begin with)

That being said, small modifications can be made to slow down an intruder enough that you can dispatch them or discourage them before they can do much.  A 2X4 screwed to the floor can be used as a spot to wedge another board that goes against the door, preferably under the knob or another piece of wood fastened midway up  the door itself.

Windows, especially sliding doors are an issue, just due to their construction.  They are busted in easily. I keep the dogs in the back where the sliding door is.  At least they are a warning device.

I guess my biggest problem is I live in a subdivision, where everyone can see everyone. Knowing neighbors would be good. But maybe best to re-locate. The big issue is to sell the house in a collasping economy.

We have a 2-1/2 year old female Shepard/Rotty cross with a wonderful disposition.  Good with kids, hard on vermin.  We are considering puppies this year.  Suggestions?

Large dogs who can stand thier ground with good family pet dispositions and enough intelligence to diferentiate stranger from intruder are not all that common.  I was thinking more of what breed/breed mix of sire might generate the best puppy results.  Pit bulls and staffardshire terriors etc are great IF YOU CAN FIND A SOLID SAMPLE and are tough to train.  The first couple of years is high energy.  The outcomes can be random because so many breeders do not cull the untrainable ones.
