Take 5 1/2 cups of cold water, 2 cups of corn meal, and one tablespoon of salt. Wisk them all together in a crock pot. Cook on high for 3 hours stiring once per hour. Pour out contents into bowl and cool in refrigerator overnight. You should have corn meal mush in the morning.
The box of corn meal I bought says 2 lbs. 8 oz. I measured it out in cups, and the box had almost exactly 7 cups of corn meal in it which yields a weight of .38 lbs per cup of corn meal. That figure might help somebody plan their food storage.
The above recipie yields 3.5 lbs of corn meal mush assuming that there is no water vapor loss since you used a lid on your crock pot.
The cost of the corn meal used was about .76 cents, the salt may have added a couple cents. I figure that amount of food could keep a person going for 2 days in relative comfort. That's .38 cents per day.
