Survival dogs
« on: January 30, 2009, 11:11:06 AM »
I recently saw an ad or a post on one of the one of three forums, MAS, Survivalblog or Survivalistboards,  about a place that sells speclly trained survival dogs.  I cannot find it now.  Did anyone else happen to see that, and could post the link?

Fear is the mind-killer
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration
I will face my fear
I will permit it to pass over me and through me

Where the fear has gone there will be nothing
Only I remain

Sounds like good marketing...but once "tshtf", if the dogs do leave, you would be hard pressed to get a refund!

Indeed i have heard that, and was he petting a big dog when he said that? I figure my now 3 yr old very friendly lab with all the equipment he started with but no indescriminate breeding ever allowed, could be used to sire pups in spring and early summer and then the best ones could be sorted and the rest might be real tasty on those cold nights sitting near the fire during the starving moons of winter. But if you try to eat my best friend well, maybe that might not be such a good idea, ya know, ya know what i mean? So he has never been allowed to learn to chase deer or livestock, just call them back to your side that's all and give them a sweet pet, no more, that's all the really want is your sweet pet and some regular chow. My guy could never survive long on just the scraps from my table he's just too specialized for that but if you wanted to know about dog breeds and some of the things they have been breed to do and their care and exercise requirements you could check this book out at the library:

If I was not at sea all the time. I would have a German Shephard. Maybe an ex-police dog. I think most people could train thier own dogs to do what ever they want them to do. It just takes time and consistance. I would not spend $1500 on a dog. That could buy alot of food.

take a look at Malinios Shepards as well. They are most exclusively used as military and police dogs, much faster and more agile than Germans, a bit smaller and short haired.
in my avatar he was 5 months, now he is 8 months and bigger but his full potential is coming out, and he sure lives and breathes to follow commands is all he wants to do

And if i was living in a climate where a short haired dog would thrive, one breed to consider is the Rhodesian Ridgeback. This dog was bred to hunt lions with his pack leader. They don't hardly ever bark they just bite. These dogs make excellent companions for long distance runners because they were bred to thrive in the African savana and run all day with their pack leaders chasing lions. If you did that to my lab he would follow you until he dropped dead but he would drop dead, just not bred for long hot runs without much water. labs are about the friendliest full time puppy you could ever want and as a watch dog they are useful because they always want to greet whoever is coming to the door to lick their hand asking for something sweet, and he almost never barks (training) either. The only way he would bite you is if you had the ball he was trying to get out of your hand but he is still a watch dog

Dogs are like knives the best one is the one closest to hand, but when you have a specialized job you get the specialized tool.

One of my neighbors has a great pyrinies looks like a 200 lb ball of fur but she is really only about 90 lbs. That breed will protect their pack members from bear and mtn lion (we have both) and will hunt down coyotes and kill them if allowed to run free. She said she choose that dog to give her kids two steps toward the door and she has spoken with them all about what to do if big girl starts to get real excited.

Nice looking dogs you have their Offdalip.
I think if I were looking at a small dog I would get a Jack Russell Terrier, their are like a Swiss Army Knife. I here they are hard to train. But a pretty fisty little dog to have around.

My neighbor has one. fastest thing you ever saw in the world.

Cornering ability is unbeatable, certainly my two dogs cannot even turn as tight and fast a corner as that jack russell, but then my malinois catches him on the straightaways with those long legs of his

And those little terriers have no off switch. The folks i have know always kenneled them if they were away from the house for even a few minutes. Got rats? get terriers. Need something big enough to take care of Momma while you are done the corner store those Malinois start lookin real good. Don't they train them as war dogs to fight with the soldier?

I think the JRT has the highest kill ratio on rats of any dog. Obviously fast enough to catch them.
