Feed store wheat and corn
« on: January 17, 2009, 01:56:37 PM »
This is food for thought.  I purchased organic, health food store wheat at well over a dollar a pound.  I went to my feed store and purchased wheat for 20 cents a pound.  It may require a little extra cleaning, but otherwise is a way to store a lot of wheat for little cash.  Since this worked, I decided to check out feed corn. Organic corn, $2 a pound.  Feed corn, 10 cents a pound.  Again, I had to clean it a bit as I put it into my grinder, but it made great cornbread.  It needs to be ground fine because the outer part, the pericarp, will be slightly gritty (crunchy) if ground too coarse.
Both seeds may be planted in your garden also. I now have 500 pounds of wheat and 500 pounds of corn for $150.  It can also feed my chickens and goats if needed.

Caution with the corn please.  The corn varieties sold as feed may not be fit for human comsumption.  And, the organic certification process varies greatly.  Does anyone remember the name of the thread where this was discussed at length.

I think it maybe "storage and portablity" in the topic of "frugality" that you are talking about...

Food/untreated seed grain is already cleaned.  Feed grain is not cleaned.

Treated seed grains are generally poisonous, do not eat unless really sure what they are treated with and it is safe for humans to eat.

Even if not, AverageJoe, it is still a good thread to read. Dame put good effort into it.

I read Dames thread. Very well done.  The corn and wheat I bought is definitely untreated.  My plans are to grow my own this summer, but if the SHTF before harvest, me and the chickens are going to be dining together.

I buy all my wheat from the Mormons at their Bishops Storehouse as they sell hard red wheat at $6.05 for 25lb. and hard white wheat at $7.40 for 25lb.

I am not Mormon but can go and shop at their storehouse asa I am sure you can to if there is one in your location.

Sysko,
That is a good price.  I'll have to see if there is a Bishops Storehouse in St. Louis.  There is a Temple there.

Not sure if I am suppose to post links or not so my apologies upfront! But the price list and locations can be found at providentliving.org under "locations" and price list under "family food storage". There are other items besides just wheat. Also I noticed yesterday that Honeyville Food Products have added and will be adding more freeze dried veggies (http://store.honeyvillegrain.com/).
