My cats are working cats.  Even the elderly one.

Our neighbors' houses are overrun with mice.  The mice try to move into our house too, but the cats take care of them.  Last night Faf caught one, and a few days ago Tia caught one.  YAY Tia!   :gen013:  I didn't think she still had it in her.

(When Tia killed that mouse the other day, she left it in the hallway.  When we woke up in the morning, our 18 month old got out of bed first (we all sleep together) and toddled to the other room to play.  My husband and I stayed in bed, cuddling and talking.  When we got up and found the mouse, we realized the kid must have seen it, and probably tasted it.  He tastes everything.  My friends teased us that NYC mouse is a delicacy.)
A strong woman won't let anyone get the better of her… But a woman of strength gives the best of herself to everyone.

There was a culinary fad in France a few years ago. Chefs really were cooking and serving rats. Real ones. It was considered some kind of delicacy. I don't know if they're still doing it or not. I wouldn't have any problem eating a rat. There's got to be at least a half a pound of edible meat on a large one. To me that's just a hamburger with little feet and a tail.

I bet G. Gordon Liddy has great recipes!

I think I would have to be getting low on the other food sources first.  Then go for the rats.  I am not sure why that is, I have no problem eating squirrels.  And those are just cute rats.

If rat ever does make it onto your menu, I would recommend soaking the dead rat in water that has been treated with bleach just as a precaution against disease. Submerge it completely with weights too to make sure any fleas die.

I would seriously recommend avoiding rat meat at almost any cost.  It isn't just a matter of being squeamish,  rats are a high risk vector of several very serious diseases.

The cats are welcome to them :laughing002:

My dog's earn thier keep and always have; even the toy poodles I had when my kids were little.  The dog was an endless source of entertainment and social feedback; as well as an excellent house alarm.

Toy poodles do not like strangers and mine would not except food from anyone they did not know.  The also make a great deal of noise every time the door opens and they don't think the person belongs there.

I currently keep two large dogs.  They cover one another, and take shift work when necessary.  I like to get a new puppy when the younger of the two is about 5 years old.  That way the youngest dog is fully trained (mostly by the other two) by the time the old one wants to lay in the sun or the kitchen most of the time.

Mice are a bit small. I would grind them up in a jar and use them as bait for traps rather than eating them. Free cat food too.

Watch that old movie "never cry wolf" for epicurian advice on eating mice.

I am now thinking "what about my dog"?  Are any of you stocking food for you pets?  I can't imagine how much space it would take to store food for my dog would take up.  I wonder if he could hunt for his food?  Will domesticated dogs revert to wild animals if not fed?  Go feral?  That would be a bad thing.

Just buy a large bottle of barbeque sauce. :eatdrink026:

Other than being vegan, I agree.  AMazing stories out of Katrina about cats staying put and finding enough clean water for their dogs to drink.  I understand the emotional connections people make to pets - we had cats growing up - but for me personally, they would be the first thing to go if it came to a crunch.
Wise selfishness is taking care of everyone else so that they don't bring harm to you.
